For me it will be the year where I definitely took full advantage of the world opening up and travel becoming easier, ensuring I was somewhere overseas every month. Yes I have been very fortunate, but also I took every opportunity to travel that came my way.
Looking back my year has been full of travel highlights.
I started 2022 amongst the mid-century modern gorgeousness of Palm Springs enjoying the outdoor lifestyle.
I had arrived after spending 2 weeks driving Pacific Highway 1 from the wine region of Sonoma County, through National Parks with stunning Redwood forests, past the breath-taking sea views at Big Sur and the elephant seals at San Simeon. Stopping to take in the sunset at Morro Bay and celebrating Christmas in the Spanish mission town of Santa Barbara. What a way to end one year and start another.
After the excesses of California I headed to a wellness resort in the Dolomites, which was about immersing yourself in the outdoors but also enjoying great food and wine surrounded by awesome scenery.
Easter saw me having lunch overlooking one of the wonders of the world - the Pyramids of Giza.
I had returned to Egypt after 30 years. The sights had not changed but, being older, I soaked in the history and returned to a spot where, as a backpacker, I had only been able to afford a drink whilst watching the sunset. This time I was staying at the iconic Old Cataract Hotel so could indulge in the fabulous sunset on the balcony of my own room.
I managed to prove to myself that with little time difference, Cape Town is doable as a short break. Fitting in as much as I could in 3 nights. I hiked Table Mountain. Visited the penguins of Boulders Beach on the way to the Cape of Good Hope. Sought out the best wineries and dined in some fabulous restaurants.
I fulfilled my lifelong dream of spending time in close contact with Chimpanzees, whilst staying at one of the most magical lodges, Greystoke.
With Carlos, my private guide, I sped to Devils Throat at Iguassu Falls as soon as the National Park opened. We were rewarded by being the first and only ones there for 20 minutes until the selfie sticks appeared.
I stared in awe every day during my stay in the Atacama Desert at the breath-taking beauty of the landscape.
Finally I discovered that heading to Cancun does not mean a string of faceless All-Inclusive hotels. There are some stunningly beautiful and individual properties too.
It’s also possible to mix beach with a good dollop of culture. Head inland and you discover ancient Mayan ruins, colonial towns with sherbet coloured houses and stunning cenotes. It’s a place where you really can mix beach and culture.
To make the most of every window of opportunity you are given to travel next year, please do get in touch and let’s start planning now, so that you know 2023 will be the best it can be.
